DFI Day 9- External recognition

Can't Imagine!!! Day 9 , The final day of the training and ecternal certification!  Time flies. I really enjoyed all the DFI sessions and gained a lot of digital skills where each session was interactive, interesting and fruitful. I believe DFI is an amazing platform for teachers to learn, refresh, create, share and stay connected. Dorothy's session helped me to gain more information about Manaiakalani and the programms they learn. I feel previleged to be a part of this amazing community. With DFI training, I perceive empowered.

Dorothy talked about different opportunities that are available to teachers and how we can empower others with the knowledge we have gained through these 9 weeks. To stay conncected we have been added to DFI alumni groups.

while doing google certification 1, there were some technical difficulties which were annoying. However those were resolved by the facilitators. I got my first Google badge and a certificate. I'm so thrilled.

I am grateful to my facilitator Naomi and other facilitators for their efforts and guidance without which this wouldn't be possible.

DFI Day 8 Computational Thinking

Day started with Karakia led by Vicki and then followed by connecting with each other in our bubble group. Everyone shared their week and the previous learning that they have used in the class and if they find anything difficult or if they need any help with something.

Connecting with Manaiakalani- Dorothy

Being Empowered and making our learners and whanau empowered, can help us thrive in this continuously changing world digitally. The word agency is changed with Empowerment because it was regarded as taking choices away from learners and whanau. Children from low socio economic income have known far more less words than higher socio economic income. Technology can absolutely strengthen and empower our learners and whanau. we can change circumtances to empower young people through education. We can develop oral language and enable them to learn. Equity, choice and power  EDOS is available to whanau and they can get inernet at home  free of charge. Manaiakalani want to empower the eductors so that they can empower learners.

 Future of Tech- Amie

Technology is changing every second. Our future job , communities and societies will be totally different than what we have today.  We have to think and empower ourselves to what future technology could bring to us. At the same time, we have to think how can we empower our learners for future jobs.

Intro to computational thinking- Vicki

I totally agree that DFI program has really empowered me and gave me the confidence to use specific digital technologies to teach and assess my learners. Digital technology curriculum  involves computational language and the fundamentals. Progress outcome includes breaking down non-computerise task, using algorithm, sequencing, identifying errors and rectifying those errors. This session was really helpful for me as I intend  to teach DT next year.
We looked at different DT outcomes on TKI. I know some of the programms that kids used. However, there were many new DT which I haven't heard of. I tried some of coding programmes during exploring time. I tried scratch pad and Minecraft. It was fun and at some point frustrating when I couldn't achieve what I wanted to achieve. Long way to go!!!!!

DFI Day 7 Devices Agenda

 DFI Day 7 Devices Agenda

Ubiquitous learning is accissible to anyone at anytime. Learning can happen when we are out of class. learners can have high quality learning despite teachers not being in the class. Visible teaching will allow rewindable learning for students. It provides new opportunity for learning which wasn't available previously. There are many tools available for teachers to use to create rewindable content. However, teachers should keep in mind that learners are able to find the content easily.

 Cybersmart:

Cybersmart learning as a whole school is very vital as learnrers will be hearning the common language through out their schooling. By being cybersmart, learners can become internet smart, internet brave, internet kind, internt alert, internet strong. Being cyber smart includes smart learners, smart footprints, smart relationship, smart teachers, smart parents, smart money  and many more. Empowered learners are confident, connected and are life long learners.

Hapara Hot tips:

I found this very helpful as I use Hapara for all my classes. I didn't explore the progress tab earlier. I think this is very helpful for me to see how students are doing, who have submitted and who haven't started it. I learnt how can I comment on student's work from workspace.

Manaiakalani Journey and life as a chromebook user :

Partnership, Participation and protection were fundamental thought of Manaiakalani to provide device to each and every student.

I learnt so many different  short cuts. I feel this was  a great learning opportunity as sometimes learners uses it in the class and I don't know how that happened and what I can do.

Screencastify:

We can create rewindable learning experience by capturing screen recording . There are many different tools available for different devices. Such as Screencastify, Quicktime and Screencast for chrome. We will be creating a screencast video today in our create session.

DFI Day 6 - Enabling Access- sites

Morning started with Karakia and then we went to our bubble to discuss what's working and what's not and what help we need with the sites.

Connecting with Manaiakalani- Dorathy

Rangitamaro- Idea of being connected was the main focus. How Manaiakalani cluster started to grow with many school joining in. We have a shared language that we have in common help us to build and be able to upskill to achieve common objective of create, learn and share. Manaiakalani helps educators in many ways to support the journey.

Connecting with teachers and learners is very important: Tuhi Mai and Tuhi Atu and secondary connect is great opportunity for teachers and learners to connec and sharet with others and enrich teaching and learning.

Learning using Google sites- Vicki

Create and share:

We looked at other people sites and discussed visual appeal and user experience and positives and negatives. I haven't made any sites yet. It is an insighful day for me. I learnt how to create site and a button. I started making my own site. We had a look at others site too. It's still in initial stage.

DFI Day 5 Collaborate sites

Today's day started with Karakia and then followed by grouping into digital bubble. We shared what worked well and what didn't and what we want to learn.

Connecting with Manaiakalani- Dorothy

Dorathy shared about Kaupapa which is making teaching and learning visible. It is important to apply the learning visible to our students. Teaching material should be visible to learners, whanau, teachers and collegues. Making learning visible helps learners to use many different resources to understand the topic and whanau can help them to learn too.  Intentional use of technology can be a game changer and we can take it to another level. Google site is one of the tool to design learning visible. The idea behind it is  no surprises. Making learning accessible, available and visible takes the element of surprise away.

Hapara Hot Tips- Vicki

We looked at Hapara Highlights.

Multi Modal- Vicki

The way we communicate with each other has changed drastically.  Engagemeent pesonalised learning and  empowering isimportant to learners success . If studnents are not engaged and are not hooked, then we won't be able to  achieve the goal. While creating a  learning site, it is  vital  to think how can we engage our students with visual appeal, personalised learning,  different ways of representing content learning on the site.

Exploring the sites

In our bubble we looked at different Multi Modal sites. I am very impressed with the sites and got some great ideas how people organise their sites.

DFI- Day 4- Dealing with Data

Day started with Karakia by Vicki. We were put in the bubble to share how was the week and have we used anything and how it went. Naomi  taught how to get embed codes from Google doc, slides, forms and where to put it in the blog.

Connecting with Manaiakalani -Dorothy Burt

Dorothy continue with pedagogy create, share and learn. Today's focus was Tohatoha(share). Sharing is not something new but it was there since ages. However, the way we share things have changed. Digital world and the features like  speed and emplification changed dramatically since 2005. Social media is a powerful tool to either post, comment or giving feedback. I totally agree that using social media has really caught attention of students interms of engagement. Sharing with purpose and having the authentic audiance is very important.

the pilot teachers were given choices to use different platform such as fliker, facebook and other platforms. the conclusion was to use blogger is more effective. Sharing is part of connceting with people.

Chalk and Talk with Naomi

Naomi went through the features of Google form. I use google form but not quite often. I need to explore more and learn to use the settings as per my requirement. I created a google form. Due to internet issues, I couldn't do much. However, here is the link to my google form.

Hapara top tips with Jacob

Hapara sharing tab is useful for further visibility and insight into student's drive. Student can arrange the work into right folders.

Google My Map with Phil

I have never used My Maps. This is something new for me to explore. I learned measuring distances and area. I explored some functions and need more time to practice it.

Google Sheets with Vicki

I am a beginner level user of Google sheets. I learned a lot in this session. I didn't know about freezing row and column. I used to go forth and back to check if I'm looking at the right data for particular student. This is a life saver!! I still need to use more functions to manipulate data according to my objective. During explore sessions, I tried some functions. I found filter function a bit tricky and need more practice.

Create and Share

I created a google sheet from a blog post of a  student named Finau from Pt England school. I looked at   her archive data and entered into google sheet and used function 'chart' , downloaded as png and added as below.

 DFI-Day 3- Media

Today's session started with Karakia by Phil and then we were put into our bubble to connect with the group and looking at what WWW session. Naomi helped me on how can I  convert picture into document.

Connecting with Mananikalani with Vicky

Today's session was led by Vicky and the main focus was 'Create', Hanga - Its all about HOOK! We need to nurture creativity but we have to think how can we do it.  Giving students more opportunity to explore the nature provides opportunity to nurture. She went through different school and students creations and the learning oppotunity we as a teacher can provide. It's important for us to be creative and learn and explore new things. We need to think what our creative pursuit and keep on working on it. Watching the clip of  a school creativity, I started wondering how can I make my FNC class more creative and how can I make my classroom space more enjoyable where students want to stay and learn more.

Vicky went through research. Successful teachers used case studies which helped students to think and learn. Focus to be given to creativity rather than finishing content. It is proved that students learn more when they explore and create and will have huge shift in their learning.

Chalk and Talk- You tube

The session was led by Amie. She went through how to create your own you tube channel, playlist and  share it through google drive or google sites.. I created my channel and created a playlist. It was fun  playing around You tube. However, I need to still explore on creating playlist and how to share it with students.

Hapara Hot Tips

We looked at Dashboard and what things can we do init.

Media Deep Dive- Kerry

I learned different apps with which we can use to make videos and share it with the class and how we can use to to enhance students creativity. Green screen is another tool we can use to make videos. However, there are few things that we need to consider when using green screen. Podcast is another option students can explore. I have neither made any video nor I've asked my students to make one. I think I was hesitant to use it as I wasn't making one. However, after today's session, I would like to start making some videos with different tools I learned today and would like to encourage students to make and share what we learned in the class.

Google drawing -Hinewa

I have never used Google drawing before. This was an awesome session where we looked at all different functions such as how to add pictures and how to  use crop function, change background colour, how to download as pdf and how to upload it on blog. I enjoyed learning google drawing and i would want to explore and use it in teaching  next week

Google Slides -Naomi

The session was led by Naomi. I could say I am at intermediate level in using Google Slides. However, after the session, I realised there are too many features that I haven't used it. when I looked at kids work, I was amazed and felt that I am at begginers level and not at an Intermediate level!! So much to learn and explore!!

Levelling up with Vicki

I learnt how to create a playlist, collaborate it with someone, add and remove function.
